I have a Chihuahua who weighs 8 pounds!!! He should only weigh about 5 pounds. I do not over feed him and do not feed him table scraps EVER! My vet suggested cutting back his daily food from 1/3 of a cup to 1/4 of a cup! That just seems like so little and I am afraid he will be hungry but he needs to lose weight so he will live longer. How much do you other Chihuahua owners feed your dog?To Tam-a-tranny or whatever your name is... 3lbs on a small dog is a lot of extra weight. Get your head out of your big fat butt and move along skank. The vet said he was ok when he was 6.8lbs but ideally, for his bone structure he should weigh 5lbs to avoid having joint pain later on. Also, I met both of his parents when I bought him and Mom was 3lbs and Dad was 5lbs. I'm just going off of what my vet told me. Obviously I want my dog to live a long and healthy life.

I have two. One is 7 lbs and the other is 3.5 lbs. Their food is out all of the time so I don't know how much they eat, but we have switched to the weight loss IAMS brand dog food. Our 7 lbs dog has lost 1.5 lbs since starting this. Also, do you have a backyard that they get to run around in much? They need lots of exercise for this food to really work.

my chi weighs eight lbs. too. but i have had some recent posts about her being over weight. Now, she eats about 1/3 of a cup plus treats when she goes potty. Her treats are the 50 Calorie puporonie packs. I don;t know if you have seen them. They come in a box and it says for a Chi they can have 50 calories worth of snacks a day (a whole pack) Now, she doesn't even eat half a pack a day. She used to be 10 lbs (i kno, insane!) But, that's b/c of my mom feeding her scraps (I recently moved) ok I am rambling...but walk him/her a lot!! Play a lot! I think exercise makes the world of difference and I say listen to your vet.

Your vet must think he is over weight to want him to lose 3lbs. Yes to the person that made fun of him having to lose "just" 3lbs for a dog that size it means it's about 40% over weight so yes it's a huge deal. It's like you being about 85lbs over weight.I free feed mine as they tend not to over eat and I have 2 that only weigh 3lbs. They have Wellness Weight Management food though. My dog who was a little over weight is now down to normal weight.Feed a good weight control food and give 2 good walks a day as well as extra playtimes. Of course treats can add loads of weight to them so treats should be things such as baby carrots or green beans. Not store bought treats that contain huge amounts of fat. Some poorly bred Chi's can be 10lbs or more so I am going on the fact your vet said he needs to lose weight

When you say he should only weigh 5 lbs -- where did you get this? If it's from the person who sold the dog, just ignore it. Some chis get bigger than others. If your vet said this, then that's different, but in that case, I'd assume the vet gave hints on how to feed. It's just difficult with small dogs but I do agree that 1/4 c for an 8 lb active dog isn't enough.
