A lady on my local freecycle has just found out that she has cancer and will be having surgery soon. She cannot keep up with her chihuahuas anymore and has offered them on freecycle. There have been several takers for the male, but no one is interested in the female, who is possibly pregnant. She is pregnant by the male chihuahua.I have considered telling her that I will take her if no one else is interested, but I hear a lot about chihuahua birth complications.I hate to see her go to the pound, but I could never afford a doggie c-section. I could afford to rehome her pups and have her spayed and given standard vet care.Should I e-mail this lady and offer to help her out or just butt out and hope that someone else(with a lot of $) will take the poor, little dog?

Do you know how far along the female is? She won't have a chance at a shelter, and I wouldn't trust just anyone with her and her puppies to have good intentions. I think it might be best to spay her before she has her pups. There are far too many in this world needing homes right now. Why add to it? It would be very nice of you to take her and have her spayed and re-home her after recovery. I think that's an excellent offer. That's my suggestion. Thanks for offering to help her!

just butt out....the dog should be spayed. Plain and simple. There are enough chi's in the world and having her spayed is the only way you can be assured she wouldn't have more. If you can't afford a dog, please don't get one, as emergencies will and do occur. Usually on the weekend when you need emergency services!

That is a tough decision. Well it matters on how old the chihuahua is and if she has had puppies before. The reason there are complications is because usually the chihuahua is to young to have kids(over 2yrs is pretty good) or the father is a bigger breed. However if she has had puppies before then I am pretty sure it is going to be alright.

It really depends on how dedicated you are to the idea of helping this dog. I personally would take the dog and if she needed a c-section, I'd start selling stuff, but not everbody is willing to or can do that sort of thing. You need to decide how dedicated you are and how much your willing to sacrifice to help this person and her dog.

Make two phone calls:One to your vet to see the complications of this pregnancy, what you can do to lower the complications and what it would cost if you had any complications. Ask about payment plans. Two to the lady (or email rather) and tell her you'd be willing to take the dog/foster but want complete ownership (sometimes they'll want the money for the puppies...)There are SOOO many ways you could afford an expensive vet trip with so many credit card options with super low interest rates. If you're willing to do all this and find a mentor (please please please do this!), I'd say take the dog. You wont be worrying about who has her or what happened at the pound and after the pregnancy, you can put her up for adoption if she isn't a good companion for you.
